July 2012 - we’re still showing the supermarkets the way on price…
July 19, 2012 in | 0 comments
Last week we compared another standard basket of goods against the big three supermarkets. We choose a pretty normal basket of shopping including fresh fruit and veg, dairy produce, bread and meat - they types of things you buy in a normal week. Here's what we used: -
Milk 1ltr Whole
Milk 1Ltr Semi-Skimmed
Free Range Eggs Medium x 6
Loose Baking Potatoes 1.5kg
Loose Carrots 1kg
Loose Broccoli 500g
Loose Onions 1kg
Cucumber Whole
Salad Tomatoes 1kg
Baby Leaf salad bag with rocket 100g
Potatoes 2.5kg bag
Bananas x 4
Large White Loaf
Topside of Beef 1.5kg
Dry Cure Back Bacon 500g
Finest Pork Sausages 600g
Granny Smith Apples x 6
Conference Pears x 5
Large Loose Nectarines x 5
cornishfoodmarket.co.uk's total came to spot on £41.00
Asda was, as you might expect, our closest competitor at £45.87, then Tesco at £48.21 and Sainsbury's at £48.43.
This comparison was done on product price alone and didn't include the cost of delivery. Across the range of 19 products there are two where we are beaten on price by all three supermarkets, bananas where they have such a grip on the market we are lucky to even get any, and bread - their instore bakeries bake off whereas we use Cornish craft bakers Berryman's of Redruth - we think our product is far superior.
Of the other products we are cheaper than all three supermarkets on 11 items and there are 6 items where we are in the middle.
What we can say is that when you buy from us you are supporting local producers - and this summer with the very wet weather we've experienced our suppliers need all the help they can get.
